Ayodhya is known for being one of the holy cities connected

Ayodhya, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, is primarily known in connection with Hinduism as the birthplace of Lord Rama, a significant deity in the Hindu pantheon. However, in recent years, Ayodhya has also gained attention due to its cultural and historical connections with other countries, particularly Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Korea: Ayodhya is associated with Korea through the legend of Princess Suriratna, who is believed to have traveled from Ayodhya to Korea and married King Kim Suro, establishing the Kim dynasty in ancient Korea. This legend forms the basis of the historical and cultural ties between Ayodhya and Korea, and it is celebrated through cultural exchanges and events.

Thailand: Ayodhya is also connected with Thailand through the Ramakien, which is the Thai version of the Hindu epic Ramayana. The story of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his loyal companion Hanuman is revered in Thai culture, and Ayodhya is considered a sacred place in the Thai Buddhist tradition. The Thai people often refer to Ayodhya as "Ayutthaya" and have historical and cultural ties to the city.

Indonesia: Similarly, Indonesia has cultural ties with Ayodhya through the Ramayana epic. The Indonesian version of the Ramayana, known as the Ramayana Kakawin, is an important part of Javanese literature and culture. Additionally, Ayodhya is also significant in Indonesian Hinduism, particularly on the island of Bali, where Hindu traditions are still practiced.

These cultural connections have fostered a sense of shared heritage and history between Ayodhya and these countries, leading to exchanges of ideas, traditions, and cultural practices. This has further solidified Ayodhya's status as a significant pilgrimage site and a symbol of cultural unity across borders.

Ayodhya – Unlocking India’s tourism potential

The grand inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22nd by Prime Minister Modi is not only a significant religious event but also carries profound economic implications. This historic moment not only establishes a sacred site but also heralds the transformation of Ayodhya into a potential tourist hotspot, anticipating an estimated influx of over 50 million visitors annually. The substantial investment of US$10 billion in this project includes the development of a new airport, a revamped railway station, a township, and enhanced road connectivity. This comprehensive makeover is poised to trigger a multiplier effect, giving rise to the establishment of new hotels and various economic activities.

Beyond its immediate economic impact, the Ayodhya project serves as a compelling template for infrastructure-driven growth within the tourism sector. India, endowed with vast tourism potential, is poised to benefit significantly from this initiative. The tourism sector contributed $194 billion to the GDP in FY19 and is projected to grow at an impressive 8% compound annual growth rate, reaching a substantial US$443 billion by FY33.

Religious tourism continues to be a dominant segment in India, attracting millions of annual visitors despite existing infrastructural challenges. Ayodhya, through its enhanced connectivity and improved infrastructure, is strategically positioned to make a substantial economic impact as a new religious tourist center. The Rs850 billion ($10 billion) makeover is set to propel Ayodhya from a tranquil town to a global religious and spiritual tourism destination.

The centerpiece of this transformation is the newly constructed Ram temple, which comes at a cost of US$225 million (Rs18 billion). This iconic structure is expected to be a driving force behind the surge in tourism, prompting increased economic and religious migration to Ayodhya. This influx of visitors is anticipated to benefit multiple sectors, including hotels, airlines, hospitality, FMCG, travel ancillaries, and cement industries.

Furthermore, significant infrastructure upgrades are underway to facilitate and enhance tourism in Ayodhya. The operational phase of a new airport, with a cost of US$175 million, is a crucial component of this effort. Additionally, the railway station has been upgraded, doubling its capacity to accommodate 60,000 passengers per day. Plans for a 1,200-acre greenfield township and improved road connectivity further signify a concerted effort to transform Ayodhya into a tourism hub.

Looking ahead, with additional domestic capacity and an international terminal expected by 2025, Ayodhya is poised to emerge as a key player in India's tourism landscape. The comprehensive transformation of Ayodhya reflects a visionary approach to harnessing the economic potential of religious tourism while setting a robust template for future infrastructural growth in the broader tourism sector.
